The course covers a range of fundamental processes to do with areas such as identification, selection, imaging, description, metadata, access, transfer, storage and distribution. It introduces preservation management tools and strategies, and includes key concepts, standards, cultural protocols and issues that may need to be recognised or addressed.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Explain the benefits of preservation and the key factors that affect the preservation and digitisation of different information formats.
- Apply knowledge of fundamental preservation and digitisation processes and associated cultural protocols to records and other information assets in a variety of physical and electronic formats.
- Identify and evaluate preservation management tools and strategies.
