This final professional experience placement allows ākonga to demonstrate that they meet the Teaching Standards (in a supported environment) and the expectations of the Teaching Council Code in Our Code Our Standards through an in-depth knowledge of, and critical engagement with these standards.

Ākonga will be expected to weave together all that they have learned to provide high-quality, inclusive, culturally relevant teaching. Ākonga will be expected to competently carry out the roles and responsibilities of a kaiako with support, and contribute fully to the teaching and learning context as part of a team. A strong focus of this practicum is promoting equity and inclusion for diverse tamariki and rangatahi through the provision of high-quality practices. They learn to apply the elements of Teaching as Inquiry.

The Culminating Integrative Assessment (CIA) provides ākonga with the opportunity to articulate their philosophy of learning and teaching as they prepare to graduate as a qualified early childhood, primary, or secondary kaiako.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Incorporate te reo Māori and tikanga-a-iwi in interactions, planning, assessment and the curriculum.
  • Manage the complexities of the teaching role, including completing the Key Teaching Tasks, fulfilling everyday responsibilities, and knowing when and where to ask for support and when to assume leadership.
  • Apply current theory and research on understanding and guiding behaviour to justify their choice of appropriate pedagogical practices.
  • Critically reflect on how working towards meeting the expectations of Our Code Our Standards has influenced their teaching practice.
  • Articulate and apply own philosophy of teaching and learning appropriate for their education setting.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills that meet the Standards (in a supported environment) and expectations of Our Code Our Standards.

Assessment

100% internal assessment and includes a practicum.
