This course introduces the performing and visual arts as curriculum. A focus will be on the variety of assessment types related to the different strands. The key competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum are addressed through a range of theoretical perspectives, teaching strategies, pedagogies and content knowledge.

These are examined with view to supporting the creativity of tamariki and promoting equitable engagement and outcomes for all tamariki. There will be a focus on Māori and Pacific expression through the Arts. A further focus will be on curricular links between Te Whāriki and the New Zealand Curriculum leading to understanding of the elements of the curricula.
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Discuss the strands of the Arts curriculum and their impact on assessment approaches.
- Apply approaches that promote the Arts as integrated curriculum supporting the creativity of tamariki, including Māori and Pacific perspectives.
- Evaluate teaching strategies that support tamariki to make and convey meaning of their world through the Arts.
