Mathematics and Statistics: Learning Theory Lens

EDU624

With a focus on learning theory, in this course ākonga extend their knowledge and skills of mathematics and the mathematics curriculum studied in ‘Mathematics and Science in the Early Years’ to the point that they are confident in their ability to at least level 6 of the New Zealand Curriculum.

They focus on differentiating mathematics for the various skill levels of tamariki, including those with dyscalculia, in the three mathematics strands with a focus on enhancing equitable engagement of all tamariki. Ākonga are introduced to open-ended mathematical tasks and a problem-based inquiry approach to teaching mathematics. They acquire skills and strategies to engage all tamariki and deliver culturally responsive, respectful and informed learning and teaching practices in mathematics exemplifying partnership with parents, whānau and communities.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Analyse strategies that explain complex mathematical concepts.
  • Utilising learning theory, apply teaching methodologies that recognise individual development and learning in mathematics.
  • Plan learning in each of the three mathematics strands using a problem-based inquiry approach taking account of input from parents, whānau and communities.
