In this course ākonga become familiar with concepts that are foundational to the learning and teaching of Numeracy, Mathematics and Science including the role of appropriate resources and approaches. This course presents how play-based learning and play-based teaching are applied in the early years in these curriculum areas.

A focus is collaboration with parents, whanau and communities in linking to Māori and Pacific scientific knowledges and contextualising learning experiences to the local context. The curricular links between Te Whāriki and the New Zealand Curriculum are explored.
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Communicate a variety of theoretical perspectives relating to the early acquisition of science and mathematical concepts and numeracy skills with a specific focus on Māori and Pacific knowledges.
- Apply play-based learning and play-based teaching approaches to the teaching of Numeracy, Mathematics and Science in the early years.
- Apply appropriate teaching methodologies that recognise individual development and learning in order to broaden the deepen tamariki knowledge and develop their skills and dispositions in a positive manner.
