Ākonga have opportunity to unpack the English Language Learning Progressions (ELLP online) exploring what every teacher needs to do to enhance the English learning of tamariki who have English as an additional language (EAL). Promoting an equity perspective, they learn how to acknowledge, utilise and build on the language in which the tamariki are fluent. They learn to use a range of effective, research-based pedagogies to develop reading and viewing knowledge, skills and dispositions of tamariki. They also learn to use diagnostic assessment for planning and programming for English, ensuring all tamariki are practising making meaning and creating meaning at each curriculum level.
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Apply current theoretical models and approaches to reading and viewing literacies.
- Use reading assessment tools to determine next steps in learning.
- Discuss strategies that will promote equitable outcomes for all tamariki, including listening and speaking, to enhance the literacy acquisition of tamariki who have English as an additional language or who have reading difficulties.
