This online course examines the basis of te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership and its historical and educational significance for kaiako in early learning services and schools. Ākonga will have opportunities to engage with Mātauranga Māori, and also learn te reo Māori me ōna tikanga for use in their educational setting and experience a noho marae.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Discuss the significance of Māori as Tangata Whenua, the context in which te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed and the process of colonisation, and implications for education.
- Discuss the key differences between te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Treaty of Waitangi, and how the principle of partnership is significant for early learning services and schools.
- Explain kawa and tikanga Māori for respectful participation on a marae/pā.
- Evaluate their competency in te reo Māori and plan for continuing to develop te reo Māori knowledge and skills in their education setting.
Assessment
100% internal assessment but does include attendance at a noho marae.
