This course examines the framework and vision of the early childhood national curriculum, Te Whāriki. Ākonga will gain understanding of the Te Whāriki approach to learning and teaching and the importance of enacting curriculum that is meaningful, enjoyable, culturally responsive and inclusive for all tamariki.

This course also introduces ākonga to the importance of an integrated, holistic and bicultural curriculum approach for supporting infants, toddlers, and young children’s learning and development.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Explain the vision, principles, strands, goals and learning outcomes of Te Whāriki and its overall intent.
  • Explain how play-based, culturally responsive and intentional pedagogies and strategies support infants, toddlers and young children’s learning and development.
  • Discuss assessment, planning and evaluation approaches that are consistent with Te Whāriki.
