During this course you will experience a noho marae (marae stay) to gain a deeper understanding of Te Ao  Māori  (the  Māori  world) and the marae community.

This video below features interviews with students about their experiences on a noho marae visit.

Ākonga will have opportunities to engage with Mātauranga Māori, and also learn te reo Māori me ōna tikanga for use in their educational setting and experience a noho marae.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Discuss the significance of Māori as Tangata Whenua, the context in which te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed and the process of colonisation, and implications for education.
  • Discuss the key differences between te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Treaty of Waitangi, and how the principle of partnership is significant for early learning services and schools.
  • Explain kawa and tikanga Māori for respectful participation on a marae/pā.
  • Evaluate their competency in te reo Māori and plan for continuing to develop te reo Māori knowledge and skills in their education setting.

Assessment

100% internal assessment but does include attendance at a noho marae.
