The course content concentrates on providing students with the conceptual background necessary for gaining an understanding of the underpinning theories and practical/interventionist aspects of psychological assessment. Hence this course aims to achieve a balance between theory and practice, and to provide students with insight into the importance of such a balance.

Upon completing this course you should be able to:

  • Understand and critically evaluate the theories under-pinning the design, development and use of selected psychological tests.
  • Understand the limitations of selected approaches to measuring differences in human ability and performance on a range of dimensions (e.g. intelligence and personality).
  • Understand the ethical issues surrounding and influencing the use of psychological tests and scales.
  • Understand the factors involved in measuring and predicting employee performance.
  • Correctly use a range of psychological tests, including those that measure intelligence, personality, aptitude, and interest.

If you study 73326 Personality and Individual Differences and 73325 Psychological Assessment, and need to purchase tests as part of your employment, you can be considered for test user registration with the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER). This may give you access to mental health and behavioural tests used in specialised fields.
