This course covers basic counselling micro-skill theory, for example, establishing rapport and reflective attending. It also looks at different types of therapy, the counselling relationship, boundaries, self-care, referral and supervision.

What you will learn
When you successfully complete this course you will be able to:
- identify and describe basic aspects of counselling practice: engagement, counsellor-client relationship, counselling process
- identify and describe a range of valuable micro-skills in counselling
- access information in relation to a range of local counselling and support agencies
- identify issues related to supervision and referral
- understand and apply a range of theories in relation to counselling, especially goals, concepts, techniques and theories of personality
- demonstrate an understanding of The Treaty of Waitangi in relation to counselling and psychology in Aotearoa New Zealand
- provide an overview of a bicultural models and theoretical application.
- discuss issues related to counselling in the wider context of a multicultural environment.
