Open Polytechnic employs a wide range of learning and teaching experts who provide academic and learning support to our distance learners.

We also use contractors, mostly off campus, who are subject matter experts in their fields who provide academic support and marking services. 

As a specialist provider of open flexible distance learning, we also employ highly skilled courseware design and development, and education technology professionals, administration and customer support staff, as well as library and learning centre staff who are all focused on helping Open Polytechnic learners achieve their educational goals.

      I support students who are studying towards their Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) and Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) in the Canterbury/mid Canterbury and West Coast regions. I am the course leader for 75104 Curriculum 1 and EC724 ECE Curricula and Services.

      Experience

      I am a qualified early childhood teacher. I have a Diploma in Sports and Recreation, a Certificate and Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Bachelor of (Education) Teaching and Learning (ECE). I have taught in early childhood and teacher education for a number of years, I have worked in various roles within the sector including teaching, centre owner/manager, as well as providing consultancy to services in the areas of leadership and environments. I have been a regional lecturer with Open Polytechnic since 2006.

      Research interests

      My research interests lie in the areas of men in early childhood, ICT technologies and environmental sustainability in early childhood education.

      I am a Regional Lecturer based in New Plymouth. My role includes teaching the Learning, Development and Culture courses and practicum courses in the Diploma of Teaching (ECE) and Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) programmes and supporting a regional cohort of students in Taranaki. 

      Education

      I have a PhD in Education from the University of Canterbury, a M.Ed., a BS in Education, and a Certificate in Te Ara Reo Māori. 

      Work experience

      I have extensive experience working with young children and their whānau. In New Zealand I have worked as a child & family counsellor and university lecturer since 2008. I began my position with  Open Polytechnic in 2021.

      I'm based in Ōtepoti Dunedin, where I support ākonga enrolled in our diploma and degree programmes, as well as visit ākonga on practicum throughout Dunedin city, North Otago and South Canterbury.

      Education and work experience

      I'm a fully certificated early childhood kaiako with 10 years teaching experience, primarily in supporting the learning and wellbeing of pēpi and their whānau. I also have previous experience in the early childhood teacher education space as a tutor and lecturer. I completed my undergraduate early childhood teaching degree at the University of Otago College of Education's Southland campus in Invercargill, where I was (very proudly!) born and raised. I then earned my Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching, Master of Education and PhD through the University of Otago College of Education's main campus in Dunedin, which my whānau and I now call home. Further to my tertiary education, I've also completed taumata tahi mā whā of te Te Ahu o te reo Māori programme.

      I take pride in the level of my contribution of service to the teaching and research professions. This service is multi-faceted and includes (but isn’t limited to):

      • Serving as a co-convenor for the New Zealand Association in Research in Education (NZARE) Inclusive Education & Community and Early Childhood Education SIGs,
        
        
      • Serving as a journal article and conference abstract reviewer, 
        
        
      • Serving as a member of the Ministry of Education’s Centre Design, Environmental Factors and Group Size Advisory Panel (CEGAP), which was created to provide high-level advice to the Ministry to, in turn, support the enactment of action 1.3 of He Taonga Te Tamaiti, Aotearoa New Zealand’s Early Learning Action Plan, 
        
        
      • Serving as a member of the Teaching Council’s Inclusive Education Capability Framework working group, 
        
        
      • Working as the Lead Practitioner within my own small not for profit entity, Tūranga mō ngā Mokopuna, where I provide free research-evidenced, disability, equity and inclusion oriented professional learning and development to early childhood kaiako, and
        
        
      • Amplifying inclusive early childhood education research kaupapa as an invited expert guest/keynote speaker at various early childhood events around the motu. 

      Research Interests

      These are varied but coalesce around kaupapa of inclusive early childhood education, disabled children's childhood studies, children's rights, the sociology of diverse childhoods, and the politics of inclusive education in Aotearoa New Zealand. I'm currently working on two research projects - one arising from my PhD findings that seeks to more expansively understand the diverse sensoria and modes of sensory meaning-making that autistic tamariki possess in terms of rights-oriented inclusive pedagogy and practice for early childhood kaiako, and the other exploring children's rights to an inclusive education in the Gloriavale cultural context where I'm collaborating with Gloriavale leavers and the Gloriavale Leavers Support Trust.

      I am a Regional Lecturer based in Masterton/Wairarapa.
      I am the course leader for the Self and Society Year One course in the Bachelor of Teaching ECE and I support a regional cohort of students in Masterton and the wider Wairarapa region.

      Education and work experience 

      I am currently completing a Master of Education (ECE) and hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Early childhood leadership, a Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) and Diploma of Teaching from Wellington Teachers College.

      I have previously spent many years teaching in both kindergarten and childcare settings here in Aotearoa New Zealand and abroad before moving into tertiary teaching for both Playcentre Federation and UCOL.

      I have been in my current role with the Open Polytechnic since 2018.

      I am particularly interested in mentoring relationships in education and my completed thesis will explore power relations and mentoring.

I have worked in early childhood education for over 30 years, primarily as a kindergarten teacher/head teacher, and have been involved in initial teacher education at Open Polytechnic since 2017.

      I am interested in a wide range of issues related to early childhood education including leadership, inclusion, quality, and curriculum.  I am currently working with some colleagues on a research project around kaiako diversity in early childhood education.

      Experience

      I have worked in early childhood education for approximately 30 years in many roles – Playcentre, kindergarten kaiako, professional development facilitator and for the past 10 years, academic staff member at the Open Polytechnic covering a wide range of courses.  More recently my role has shifted to practicum which has included writing the new practicum courses.  I am also a mum and Nana.

      I have a wide range of interests, however, my overarching focus is around equity, diversity and inclusion.  My M.Ed (completed in 2021) had a strong emphasis on supporting Pacific ākonga succeed in tertiary education.  My recent research is about kaiako with disabilities in ECE.

      Experience

      I have a Diploma of Teaching and a Master of Arts in Integrated Provision for Children and Families studied through Pen Green Research, Development and Training Centre. I am currently exploring PhD opportunities.

      My work across education and social care sector both in UK and New Zealand has been through a range of roles including teaching, family focused work, parenting education programmes, child protection work, and leadership of a multi-disciplinary Surestart Children’s Centre.

      I am interested in leadership and collaborative partnership development in early childhood education.

      This interest has developed through multi-disciplinary work over the years.

Both these roles are in support of the Centre of Education Studies Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) and Diploma of Teaching (ECE).  I teach in the Professional Practice and Pedagogy strand and the Research and Inquiry strand.

      I have a Certificate in Child Care and Education, a Diploma in Kindergarten Teaching, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, Communication Management (Distinction) and a Masters in Management (Distinction).

      I have served as the External Moderator for Auckland University of Technology’s Bachelor of Arts Degree in ECE and on the Auckland University of Technology Post Graduate Committee as the Early Childhood Representative. I have also worked on the West Auckland ECE Network Committee, the Auckland OMEP, the New Zealand Association for Research in Education Council, the New Zealand Association for Research in Education Ethics Review Committee and acted as peer reviewer for articles submitted to the New Zealand Journal of Educational Studies.

      I am a Regional Lecturer for Early Childhood Education based in Wairarapa. I support students in the Palmerston North, the wider Manawatu, the Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt region. I teach on the Diploma of Early childhood Education and Care (Level 5) and Bachelor of Teaching ECE (Level 7) programmes.

      Education and work experience 

      I have a Master of Education, a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and a Graduate Diploma (ECE).

      Prior to joining Open Polytechnic, I taught in a Secondary school in Fiji- years 7-13 and handled Head of department (H.O.D) responsibilities for the Geography/Social Science strand. I have also taught in various early childhood centres as a senior teacher and Team leader.

      Research interests

      I am currently working on a collaborative research project that aims to explore how ECE centres support children and families who have English as an additional language (EAL).

      Some other research areas that I am also interested in are:

      • Second language acquisition
      • Language development in young children.

      I am the Course Leader for Curriculum 2 and also support students during their practicum in my region.
